About the Ascentis GCSE-equivalent qualifications

All Ascentis GCSE-equivalent specifications were validated in consultation with local HEIs / ITT providers. They are approved for delivery as part of a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma.

In accordance with QAA Regulations, GCSE-equivalent units are ungraded. Achievement of the Learning Outcomes for the units represents achievement equivalent to GCSE Grade C or above.

Ascentis GCSE equivalents are not comparable to National Adult Literacy and Numeracy tests. The assessment methodology consists of a variety of internal and external assessments, including assignments, projects and examinations. Further detail can be found on the individual specifications.

The Ascentis GCSE-equivalent Mathematics and English specifications are sufficient to meet the new requirements outlined in the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s ‘Standards for pre-registration nursing education’ (2010), sections 3.1 for Literacy and 3.2 for Numeracy. However, ‘where GCSE qualifications are stipulated as entry requirements to a HE programme, students are advised to confirm that the GCSE-equivalent qualification is accepted by the HEI(s) to which they are intending to apply, before they make their application’ (GCSE equivalence and the Access to Higher Education Diploma, QAA, 2008).

These specifications are not for use by the Ascentis Southern Region Centres. Specifications for these centres can be found here.
