Support Staff in Schools
The Ascentis QCF qualifications have replaced the traditional NVQ qualifications for support staff in schools. The nested suite of qualifications ranges from the award at L2 which is aimed at all support staff, to certificates and diplomas for teaching and learning staff and midday assistants.
The Level 3 Award provides underpinning knowledge and understanding suitable for those who work to support children’s learning and well-being. It is therefore recommended for those who are in, or aspire to, such roles. As the units in the Level 3 Award are mandatory in the certificates and diploma, those wanting to access a pre-employment qualification are able to build on their achievement once in role, without needing to repeat work.
The Training and Development Agency (TDA) has worked in partnership with awarding organisations to develop qualifications for school support staff that will replace the existing NVQs in Supporting Teaching and Learning, the Support Work in Schools qualifications and a range of vocationally related qualifications.
The qualifications offer a mix of knowledge and competence based units. They can be taken as separate units and then built up to the full qualification as and when you require.
Those taking the certificates will need to be working in a role that allows them to demonstrate those learning outcomes relating to practice in their day to day work. Those taking the qualifications could be:
- Full or part-time
- Permanent or temporary
- Working in a voluntary capacity
- Employed by the school or local authority
- School-based or peripatetic
- Working in a maintained, non-maintained or independent school
- Investor In People
- Ofqual
- Access to Higher Education
- Anglia Examinations England
