Amanda Spielman, Ofsted’s Chief Inspector discusses the importance of promoting British values in schools and Ofsted's role in making sure this is done well

Amanda Spielman, Ofsted’s Chief Inspector has recently given a speech about the important role that education institutions play in teaching British Values to young people – “For Ofsted, making sure that the next generation understands, respects and is willing to adopt these values is essential. They are values that give a simple message to our young people: in Britain, no matter what your background, you can fit in, you can succeed and you can belong.”

Amanda goes on to say “In my view, teachers are expected to give children a proper understanding of British Values, and of what these values have contributed – and continue to contribute to – the strength and success of British society.

“Schools with the job of promoting British Values and equalities are sometimes teaching young people who get conflicting or even downright contradictory messages outside school.”

Ascentis understand the importance of British Values being embedded into the curriculum and continuously work closely with FE colleges and subject experts to develop qualifications which give tutors the tools to address such needs.

In line with government agendas and Ofsted requirements Ascentis have developed two qualifications; Entry 3 Award in Introduction to British Values and Level 1 Award in Understanding British Values. Both qualifications challenge learners to discuss and debate their understanding of what British Values means based around four key pillars:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance

The Ascentis Entry 3 Award in Introduction to British Values is being launched this August. The qualification sits within our Short Online Qualification suite and is accompanied by online interactive resources. The qualification is assessed through completion of a multiple choice online e-assessment.

Our Level 1 Award in Understanding British Values is also accompanied by interactive online resources and is assessed through the learner building up a portfolio of evidence.

Funding is available for these qualifications*.
