A Week in the Life Of... Kirsty & Mel, Ascentis Commercial Managers #LifeAtAscentis19

We are used to travelling nationwide in our role at Ascentis but the week of 25th March was something we hadn’t yet experienced. A week away from our young families leaving dads for once in charge! This is something our control freak personalities wouldn’t normally allow.

We were delighted to receive an invite from The Isle of Wight College to exhibit at an Awarding Organisation Fair in Newport, Isle of Wight on 26th March. With both of us holding events at the latter end of the week we decided to try and make appointments with colleges that we hadn’t been to, that may deliver some qualifications with Ascentis already or don’t use us at all. Success! We managed to get appointments for the full week in locations across the South. Trains and hotels booked. We gathered our documents and goodies for centres and began our #commercialtour

1st Stop – Southampton – Long Days & Delays

What we didn’t expect when we arrived at Lancaster station was what ended up being a journey taking over 8 hours to Southampton due a disruption on the line. This didn’t stop our excitement for getting on the ferry when we arrived to Newport, Isle of Wight. We hadn’t been on a ferry since a school trip to France……. quite a few years ago!

2nd Stop – Isle of Wight – Ferry Fun and Sausage Baps!

Getting on the ferry at 7am it felt like we were anywhere but the Solent, the sun was shining and we started our day talking about our amazing qualifications the best way…with a sausage bap! On arrival at the college we set up our stand and met with teachers from all departments within the college – construction, Business, Health, Access to HE – and discussed the benefits and support working with Ascentis gives.

We couldn’t leave without sending postcards to our little ones at home. (An Island to a 1, 5,8 and 10 year old is exciting)

3rd Stop – Newbury – Saved by the Bell

Another extremely early start getting the train from Southampton to Newbury. Quick change at Reading, a coffee and one hour later and we arrived at Newbury College. With a little time to spare before our meeting, we had chance to grab a cup of coffee from the college café which was just what we needed after the early start.

It was time for the meeting and we were greeted at reception by the Vice Principal of the college, off we went to the board room to talk to the team about Ascentis qualifications, just as we were about to begin there was a fire drill (you could say we were saved by the bell!). The meeting resumed and we had a great discussion with the Newbury College team.

4th Stop – Farnborough – When Two became Three

Next stop Farnborough where we were joined by our colleague Graham, as the sun was shining we decided to go and explore, on route we fell upon a very nice restaurant where we decided to stop for dinner. It was then time for an early night ready for our Curriculum Pop Up at Farnborough College of Technology the next day.

Rise and shine, off we went again. We were welcomed by Assistant Principal who gave us a lovely tour of the grounds, we then set up our stand ready for meeting tutors from across the college. We had the pleasure of meeting with many people from different departments and the day was a great success.

5th Stop – London & Birmingham – The last leg

For the last leg of our adventure we went our separate ways, Kirsty went off to Birmingham to exhibit at the AELP Spring Conference the next day and Mel and Graham headed to London for the Employability & Life Skills event. Both a great success!

Until Next Time……

We had such a busy week meeting tutors from all backgrounds, greeting new and prospective customers and travelling North to as far South as we could go.

Our job gives us an opportunity to experience visiting so many different towns and cities and to see the impact our qualifications make to real lives is so rewarding.
