Ascentis Entry Level Award in ESOL Skills for Life – Reading (Entry 3)

Qualification Overview

The Ascentis Award in ESOL Skills for Life (E3) Reading qualification is based on the National Standards for Adult Literacy and the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum. It is designed specifically for people living in Britain. To achieve the Award learners must complete 6 credits. The qualification is assessed using task-based controlled assessments. Assessment is made on the basis of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria and definitions from the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum.

Aims

The aim of the qualifications is to enable learners:

• To take a full part in the world of work
• To become independent of others, such as interpreters or translators
• To access service providers
• To travel, work and socialise beyond their local community

Target Group

This qualification is aimed at a range of learners, including

• Settled minority communities
• Refugees/asylum seekers
• Learners with English as a second language

Assessment

The Ascentis Award in ESOL Skills for Life (E3) Reading assessment allows learners to meet each assessment criterion three times. Learners must meet each assessment criterion at least once to secure achievement. There is also a requirement to achieve a numerical mark across the assessment paper to show evidence of reading ability across a range of tasks and text types. Assessments are internally marked by centre assessors and then internally verified to ensure consistency. The assessments will then be externally verified by Ascentis.
