Ascentis Entry Level Award in ESOL Skills for Life – Speaking and Listening (Entry 2)

Qualification Overview

The Ascentis ESOL Skills for Life (E2) Speaking & Listening Award qualification is based on the National Standards for Adult Literacy and the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum. It is designed specifically for people living in Britain. To achieve the Award learners must complete 12 credits. The qualification is assessed using task-based controlled assessments. Assessment is made on the basis of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria and definitions from the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum.

Aims

The aim of the qualifications is to enable learners:

• To take a full part in the world of work
• To become independent of others, such as interpreters or translators
• To access service providers
• To travel, work and socialise beyond their local community

Target Group

This qualification is aimed at a range of learners, including

• Settled minority communities
• Refugees/asylum seekers
• Learners with English as a second language

Assessment

In the Ascentis ESOL Skills for Life (E2) Speaking & Listening Award learners must achieve each assessment criterion at least once. In the Listening part of the qualification learners will listen to recordings and answer questions based on gist, detail, and response to instructions. Written responses are required for the tasks. The Speaking assessments involve working with others in order to meet the assessment criteria. Assessors must ensure that they assess individual performance. The assessments must be recorded for every learner and stored as a digital file. Assessments are internally marked by centre assessors and then internally verified to ensure consistency. The assessments will then be externally verified by Ascentis.
