Outstanding Learner of the Year 2025 Winner – Imogen Morgan

This year, our Ascentis Outstanding Learner of the Year Award received a record number of nominations. After reviewing all of the inspiring learner stories, we were delighted to award Imogen Morgan, an Access to HE Science student from Birmingham Metropolitan College, with the winning prize.

After facing serious health issues after completing her GCSEs, Imogen decided to return to education to pursue her dreams of becoming a doctor. After resitting her maths and English GCSEs and achieving grade 7 in both subjects, Imogen sat the UKCAT, meeting the high standard required for entry into medicine. She then enrolled in the Ascentis Access to Science course at BMET, where she demonstrated extraordinary dedication. Despite managing a severe and unpredictable health condition, Imogen achieved Distinctions in every unit. She has since received two offers to study Medicine at university and has become a source of immense pride for BMET’s Science department.

I feel very happy and privileged to have won my award from Ascentis. This is particularly because it’s a national award and receiving recognition for working hard throughout the year, was very much appreciated. My tutor, Farhat, and other teaching staff that I worked with, were also very proud of me, which means a lot!

My plans for the future are now to study medicine at the University of Bristol and it is clear that my positive journey at BMet and endorsements from reputable organisations like Ascentis, are part of a bright and rewarding career path for me.” – Imogen

One of the judges stated Imogen has demonstrated unwavering determination in the face of significant adversity and has demonstrated exceptional resilience and commitment to study in order to pursue her lifelong ambition to become a doctor. She has resat her GCSEs, progressed onto the Ascentis Access HE Diploma in Science, achieving distinctions across the board and has been offered two places to study Medicine at University.”

Imogen’s tutor noted, “Imogen has become a source of immense pride for the entire Science department. Her journey has inspired her peers and staff alike, showing what is possible when courage meets hard work. She has faced every barrier with grace and determination, and her story continues to motivate those around her.

Additionally, this achievement stands as a powerful testimony to the credibility and strength of the Ascentis Access to HE programmes, demonstrating that it can open doors to traditionally exclusive fields like medicine. Imogen’s success breaks new ground and challenges outdated assumptions about who can access medical education and how.”
